August was all about getting to know the cruising grounds around the Canary islands. We explored the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Gomera and learned to deal with the sailing conditions between the islands, where the winds change in strength and direction more rapidly than we ever encountered before.
In the acceleration zones between the islands, winds may suddenly increase with 10 to 15 knots and close to the islands it can be quite a challenge to sail with the squalls and calms. But with a climate so agreeable, we really enjoyed cruising these grounds where spotting pilot whales and dolphins is almost always a certainty!
What is also almost always a certainty when sailing the oceans, is that things break down. During one of the crossings between the islands, in a jibe, the traveling cars were pulled of the traveling rail. We sailed with just the genoa until we could get hold of the parts that were needed to fix the cars.
In preparing for our charter adventures, we are happy we got to know lovely marinas on all three islands and beautiful anchorages on Gran Canaria and La Gomera.
Now, we are looking forward to welcoming guests on board FARR-out in the months to come as we will be offering sail charters in this area probably until Fall 2019. We are very excited and curious about the experience of having paying guests on board. In September we have our first - "maiden" sail charter booked! On this charter we hope to explore more of the islands and its cruising grounds.
In between receiving guest on board we will be working on the "to do" list, scrapping off and as always adding on to it.
